Randolph Caldecott
Randolph Caldecott, 1846-1886, did tremendous work in children's book illustration during his short life. He produced annual books, postcards and greeting cards which enjoyed great popularity.
There is a wonderful website devoted to Caldecott here - visit it if you want an abundance of information on the man and his work.
The book that I have is R. Caldecott's Picture Book, containing a collection of illustrated works from previous annuals.
Really, many of the works in tthe book are as much for adults as for children - or more so. An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog is certainly one that has more commentary for the grown-ups than it has story for the children.
This tale of a hypocritical and vain gent and the dog that bites him is reproduced in full below. I hope to upload a few more of the stories as time allows.
